Foods that Enhance Happiness

Believe it or not it is actually possible eat certain foods and enhance peacefulness and happiness within ourselves. It comes down to certain foods that effect the chemical reactions in our brain. Often times when we are feeling down we crave processed food such as chips, white bread, sweets or alcohol. This actually means our body is low in serotonin. Serotonin is the hormone known as the ‘happy hormone’. The processed foods are quick fixes that boost the body with Serotonin but only for a short period of time. What we actually need is to eat foods that are healthy for us and release a steady amount of tryptophan, which derives serotonin. This keeps our body healthy by not craving these unhealthy foods, and keeps our minds happy by maintaining steady levels of serotonin.


Flaxseed1. Flaxseed/Flax Oil

Flaxseed is a good food that increases serotonin levels because they contain high levels of tryptophan and omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids have been used to treat depression and makes up a large portion of brain nerve cells that are very important. It is said to take 1-2 teaspoons of flax seed oil to see dramatic improvement on your mood. The picture above is a bowl of flaxseeds.

2. Buckwheat

Buckwheat contains lots of vitamin B and contains the more tryptophan than any other starchy carbohydrate. Vitamin B has been recommended for a while now as a means of improving energy levels and decreasing depression. It is important to note that starch foods stimulate production of serotonin but you need tryptophan from protein foods to create serotonin.

3. Wild Fish and Seafood

Wild fish and seafood contain oils rich in essential fat that have been shown to ease mood swings and depression. Eating sufficient fish oil will help keep your mood up when hunger kicks in.

4. Fruits

Fruits such as blueberries and bananas are excellent fruits to maintain serotonin levels. Blueberries are filled with Antioxidants and Vitamin C that are stress busters. Bananas contain high levels of tryptophan as well.

5. Eggs

Quality Eggs rank highly among foods that increase serotonin levels. Eggs contain an immense amount of omega 3 fatty acids in them, proven to improve your mood. Eggs are a great source of cholesterol which is known to raise testosterone levels which then increases serotonin.

6. Spinach

Spinach is rich in folic acid, which promotes healthy red blood cells and a strong immune system. This keeps you energized and far from depression.

It is important we implement these foods in our daily diet in order to maintain healthy levels of serotonin. This will keep us from binge eating, and promote a healthier and happier lifestyle. So let’s get to eating!
